COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Laredo Public Library Advisory Board announced on August 27 that the Recordando program will return this fall to help older adults share memories and keep their minds sharp using items from the Historical Collection—staff plan to shift meetings to 6 p.m. and explore hosting sessions offsite at nursing homes.  KGNS News
  • Elizabeth Olguin, the mother of Lance Corporal David Lee Espinoza, shared her memorable visit to the White House and thanked local agencies for the support that honored her son, who died in Afghanistan in 2021. After returning from Washington last week, she and her brother went directly to LBJ High School so the school could place a presidential coin—symbolizing national respect—at the base of his bust.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Every February, Laredo holds the largest birthday celebration for George Washington organized by the WBCA. The event shows colonial costumes, a tea party re-enactment, and a bridge abrazo ceremony—drawing about 400,000 visitors and honoring our local history.  KGNS News
  • Newcomers and Friends of Laredo will host a traveling photography exhibit to mark 42 years of welcoming residents—this event will run on Friday, Sept. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Casa Ortiz on Zaragoza St. where decades of photographs are on display.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas HB 8 overhauls student testing—United ISD will transition from STAAR to a new system soon. The district said the change is set to update testing methods in its schools.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 800 new laws took effect in Texas yesterday that will reshape government regulations—officials say the measures will soon impact public services and local operations. Residents are encouraged to stay informed of the changes as they become part of everyday civic life.  KGNS News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Laredo residents enjoyed Labor Day outdoors at Lake Casa Blanca yesterday as the holiday offered a welcome break and fun water activities. Many families gathered to picnic and swim, making the day a memorable local celebration.  KGNS News
