- ➤ SCAN invited community members to celebrate National Recovery Month at City Hall on Wednesday morning — urging everyone to wear purple to honor those overcoming challenges. KGNS News
- ➤ NeighborWorks Laredo is hosting two free workshops in November to help homeowners with deeds and tax exemptions. The Transfer on Death Deed workshop on Nov. 8 requires applications by Sept. 19—participants must provide basic property and beneficiary details to qualify. KGNS News

- ➤ At a Tuesday, September 2 meeting, the Laredo City Council recognized local artist Damaris Morales for being selected as one of 48 semifinalists in the México Canta por la Paz y Contra las Adicciones competition—her award highlights her growing international impact and commitment to positive social change. - ➤ Downtown Laredo will host the 2nd Annual 16 de Septiembre parade on Sunday, Sept. 14 — the parade will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting at the 1100 block of Zaragoza Street and ending at the Laredo ISD Civic Center. The festivities continue with a Binational Avocado Festival and the Mexican Consulate hosting the Grito de Independencia event from 5 to 9 p.m. at El Portal. KGNS News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On September 3, TAMIU hosted the 24th Sames Scholars Kick-Off Orientation for United ISD students— the program pairs them with faculty mentors and provides a $16,000 scholarship for high school graduates. Elizabeth Sames said the one-on-one guidance helps students stay focused on school and college plans. KGNS News
- ➤ Laredo ISD confirmed on September 3 that its schools will display the Ten Commandments — officials said the displays will be installed soon. KGNS News
- ➤ Laredo ISD confirmed on September 3 that it is complying with a new state law by placing donated Ten Commandments posters in every classroom. The district asked principals to hang the posters and shared photos from Anita T. Dovalina Elementary School—showing that the law is being met. KGNS News
- ➤ School districts in Laredo are preparing for a new Texas law, Senate Bill 12—also called the Parent Bill of Rights—that requires parental consent for basic health services like nurse and counselor visits. Laredo ISD has already sent forms home and will call parents if forms are missing, while United ISD reviews additional consent forms for extracurricular activities with full implementation planned for October.
