  • A community celebration called MobFest is set for Friday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. at the TAMIU Soccer Field — featuring a vendor market, activity stations and free food and T-shirts for the first 300 attendees. The event will precede the Men’s Soccer Game against the University of Jamestown at 7 p.m. and is hosted by the TAMIU Alumni Association and local partners.  Texas A&M International University

CRIME NEWS

  • Laredo police are searching for the driver of a red car that hit a 65-year-old man near Springfield and Gustavus on Wednesday night and took him to a local hospital in stable condition—police stress that drivers must remain at the scene of an accident.  KGNS News
  • Officers at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge cargo facility intercepted a commercial truck from Mexico carrying four sacks of alleged meth with a total weight of 4,241 pounds and an estimated street value of over $37 million on Aug. 29 — Homeland Security Investigations has launched a criminal probe.  KGNS News
  • CBP officers at the Laredo Port of Entry seized methamphetamine valued over $433K from a 2011 Ford van on Aug. 9 — their inspection found three packages weighing 47.09 pounds — and Homeland Security Investigations arrested the driver as the investigation continued.  LaredoBuzz
  • On Tuesday, deputies executed a search warrant at a home in the 800 block of Samlon Street where authorities arrested Diego Angel Mendoza, a 20-year-old man, after more than 200 THC vapes, 1.5 grams of cocaine and 10.7 ounces of marijuana were seized—leading to charges for possession of controlled substances.  KGNS News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dr. Covarrubias from TAMIU spoke at the NADBank Summit in San Antonio on August 28th about using zero-emission trucks for cross-border freight and then gave a keynote at Laredo College on August 26th about smart port and A.I. technology. His research showed that clean trucks can help carriers save on fuel and maintenance costs — yet high prices and few charging sites make the change hard.  Texas A&M International University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TAMIU invites any students, staff, or faculty who traveled abroad in 2025 to share their experiences today at the Global Wrap Up event. The event runs from 2-3 p.m. at the Western Hemispheric Trade Center—Room 111.  KGNS News
  • On Thursday, United High School honored Martha Castillo as the first Teacher of the Month for the school year 2025 to 26—she teaches English to emergent bilingual students and received a $250 award along with a gift basket, mug, and KGNS T-shirt.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Laredo officials updated expansion plans during a city council meeting on September 2, noting that the World Trade Bridge design phase will continue until the end of this year and its construction is set to begin in January 2027—while design for the Colombia Solidarity Bridge will start in April with construction planned for May 2029. The projects, approved after receiving a presidential permit, will add ten and sixteen lanes to boost trade between the U.S. and Mexico.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Smiles From Heaven received a $2,800 check from the Laredo Firefighters Union on Thursday, September 4 — part of a fundraiser for childhood cancer awareness that saw first responders sell T-shirts to support families battling the disease.  KGNS News
