COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Laredo residents celebrated Mexico’s Independence Day on Tuesday, September 16 at the Fiesta Adult Day Care Center, enjoying traditional food—mariachi music and dancing accompanied the event. A lively Grito competition marked the day as community members honored the holiday.  KGNS News
  • Laredo Public Library will host family art night every Tuesday in September from 4 to 5 p.m. at its central branch — each week will feature a different craft and no extra supplies are needed.  KGNS News
  • Laredo Main Street is hosting the third annual Veggie Fiesta this Saturday, September 20 at Outlet Shoppes at Laredo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the event will offer free fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, and family activities (including pizza-making and art workshops).  KGNS News
  • Iglesia Cristiana Misericordia in Laredo is planning a special event on Sept. 20 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at 4519 East Del Mar Boulevard to honor local, state, and federal law enforcement officers and their families. The event features SWAT team demonstrations & gifts donated by Amazon to thank them for their service.  KGNS News

CRIME NEWS

  • Laredo community members held a vigil on Monday for conservative activist Charlie Kirk who was assassinated in Utah as local leaders and over 100 residents called for unity ahead of his funeral scheduled for Sunday, September 21 — many expressed deep loss and urged a focus on key issues.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • City officials on September 16th awarded a key to the city to a Laredo artist in recognition of significant creative contributions—this honor marks a boost to local arts in our community.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Christina Hernandez—a dedicated LISD teacher for over 20 years—was named Teacher of the Month at Joseph C. Martin Elementary after multiple nominations and strong local ties, with 15 of her 20 years spent at the school she once attended. The award, given on Tuesday, recognizes her creative teaching and extra support for students.  KGNS News
  • Laredo's TAMIU and United ISD's Cherish Center launched an internship program that will let eight high school students work on social and digital media projects at TAMIU campus for the school year — the initiative aims to build valuable job skills.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Laredo City Council is moving ahead with a quiet zone plan to lessen the 2,000 daily train horn blasts that disturb residents near busy downtown tracks—an engineering consultant will be chosen in October to design safety improvements at 29 crossings with construction starting by March or later. The project will use up to $5 million in funds, including federal dollars from CPKC.  KGNS News
  • Laredo District 42 Representative Richard Pena Raymond is serving as Vice Chair of a new state committee created after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated in Utah—he will review Senate Bills 37 and 2972 to set rules for university courses and campus protests in higher education.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • PILLAR appointed a new medical director after the Texas Medical Board imposed a penalty — the firm said the new leader will oversee operations and boost compliance with medical standards. The appointment is seen as a step toward restoring trust with patients.  KGNS News
  • The Alzheimer’s Association will host a free talk on Alzheimer’s research and treatments on Sept 22 at The University of Texas Education & Research Center at Laredo — registration starts at 2:30 p.m. and the talk begins at 3 p.m. Dr. Maria Carrillo will explain new approved treatments and early signs of the disease — details that can help people learn more.  KGNS News
