CULTURE NEWS

  • Laredo Proud Inc. and community partners will host a binational anti-bullying poetry contest on Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Laredo ISD Performing Arts Center—participants can present poems, songs, or performances in any language and may wear Halloween costumes while competing for a $200 prize.  KGNS News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Martin High School celebrated Red Ribbon Week on October 22—raising awareness about drug and addiction dangers during a morning parade. The campaign, which began in the 1980s, will continue through the end of the month.  KGNS News
  • Miyera Gonzalez, who has taught for over 21 years, was named October Teacher of the Month at Milton Elementary—where she teaches dyslexic students using innovative methods in reading and writing.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During the City Council meeting on Monday, October 20, Laredo officials honored the TAMIU Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity for completing over 2,100 community service hours during the 2024–2025 academic year. The council also recognized leaders Rodolfo Rendon, Dylan Bryand and Carlo Ochoa for their strong commitment to local service.  LaredoBuzz

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Laredo hosts its annual Halloween Health Fair at Independence Park (1102 N. Merida) where families can get free health screenings and enjoy interactive activities. Laredo Health Promotores is partnering with Ruthe B. Cowl and other groups to offer mammogram screenings, speech therapy evaluations, haircuts, basketball classes, and raffle prizes.  KGNS News
  • Area Health Education Center will host its 41st Annual Medicine Conference — where health care workers can earn up to 10 CEUs with sessions led by board members Joseph Trout and Dr. Oscar Benavides — in Laredo. The conference will offer sessions on different medical topics for continuing education.  KGNS News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Laredo Animal Care Services introduced Fawnie, a 1-year-old Dachshund mix, as the Pet of the Week on October 22—she is fully vaccinated, microchipped and pending sterilization. Estevaun Delgado said Fawnie is sweet, does well indoors and outdoors, and is ready to join a permanent home.  KGNS News
