COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KGNS+ honored Gloria Freeman for 10 years of volunteer service with the Area Health Education Center in Laredo, where she supports mental health through the 988 initiative. She said her work is inspired by her volunteer parents and continues to include monthly seminars.  KGNS News
  • The Día de los Muertos 5K Glow Run and Catrina Contest will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov 1 at North Central Park with the 5K starting at 7:30 p.m. District 6 Councilman Tyler King said the event will feature live performances, food vendors and cultural displays—adding an evening twist to the celebration.  KGNS News
  • The Inner City Branch Library hosted a Halloween Bash yesterday at 4 p.m. that offered pizza, snacks, crafts and costume fun for residents of all ages.  KGNS News

CULTURE NEWS

  • KGNS+ launched Craft Corner, a monthly segment that highlights local artists and do-it-yourself projects. Gaby Mangual from Gabs Border Art demonstrated how to create a Halloween garland, and the show will continue to feature different local artisans.  KGNS News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The City of Laredo Economic Development Department is offering one-on-one meetings to help residents start new businesses—staff will guide entrepreneurs through zoning, certificates of occupancy and other key requirements.  KGNS News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Laredo airport director warned that flights may be delayed as the ongoing government shutdown affects air travel services—travelers should check for updates and plan accordingly.  KGNS News
  • The South Texas Food Bank is asking for donations & volunteers as Laredo families will lose SNAP benefits on November 1 due to a federal government standstill. The food bank warns that support will be needed as empty shelves and rising demand leave many without daily food assistance.  KGNS News
  • El Metro Transit is on a reduced schedule because transit staff and drivers began striking on October 27 due to a salary dispute, leaving many riders waiting and forcing some to use ride-sharing services (buses run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The transit agency said the limited Sunday schedule will continue until further notice.  KGNS News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health experts say flu season will start early next month and urge residents to get a flu shot now to prevent a rise in cases later this winter (the CDC reports peaks in December and February)(vaccination is especially important for young children and older adults).  KGNS News
