Two Mexican nationals were sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison for running a money laundering scheme that used local Laredo businesses to move drug money from Texas to Mexico and must pay fines of over $1 million and $887,000, the Department of Justice said Monday, July 21.

A Houston man, Santos Joel Garza, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison on Monday, July 21 for planning to smuggle meth into the U.S.—he and his accomplice, Britain Jean Sada, used a truck's torque converters to hide the drugs, with Sada set to be sentenced on July 24.

Four Laredo gang members were sentenced to federal prison for a violent attack at Rio Grande Detention Center that injured several inmates—Jose Regalado-Solis received 12 years while Ruben Salazar, Javier Contreras, and Jesus Guadalupe Ortega received 5, 5, and 6 years respectively.

On July 22nd, Webb County Justice Center was evacuated after a bomb threat was reported, and law enforcement investigated the situation — officials are updating details.
